HISTORY AND REPUTATION
This Parents organisation for mentally retarded was established in year 1993. Mr Carl John Henex from Norway encourageed the activities of this organization to protect the interest of the mentally retarded children. In the beginning they formed a saturday club which subsequently led to the establishment of this organization in 1993.
MEMBER BASE
The executive members are 11 whereas there are 300 general members in the organisation. There are about 10 volunteers and the number of person employed is 3.
ACHIEVEMENTS SO FAR
The main achievements of parents association for mentally retarded are as follows:
1 they have provided ID cards to the persons with disability.
1 they have prepared and made mentally retarded children participate in sport activites organized by special education.
1 they have established school for mentally retarded children as well as as prepared courses books for them.
FINANCIAL RESOURCES
UNICEF and Ministry of Social Welfare are main donors of the organisation. Some years ago the organisation was funded by some Norwegian INGO's for the awarness campaign, but now the organisation is supported by the Danish organisation called DLFL and are creating/organising awareness campaign in the rural areas.
HUMAN RESOURCES AND THEIR CAPACITY
For the human resources we have 3 persons employed in for doing the official work and they are paid by the organisation whereas volunteers are not paid. We have one programme officer, an assistant and one office messenger who is responsible for managing the office. The program officer is an experienced one and has finished her graduation. She had made some project before and was working for the womens organisation called (WEPCO) before.
ALLIES AND "ENEMIES"
Our organisation is supported by (DLFL). PAFMR is also affilated to National Federation of the Disabled and Ministry of Social Welfare.We have representatives in many villages who is eager to help us and they are helping in the way they can. PAFMR is not a big organisation. Its still young and we have to learn more. so we don't have to fear about the competition with other NGO'S but we are making effort to make our organization better and good enough to compete with the bigger ones. We have some people who is not happy with the development of the organisation, which is i think personnel.
ENVIRONMENTAL SETTING PAFMR is located in the place called Putalisadak. Putalisadk is the centre of Kathmandu and many people know about that place. Many big Organization and institutions are situated in that place and there are facilites for parking too.
