WHAT IS NUDIPU?
NUDIPU stands for: National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda.It is an indigenous umbrella NGO of persons with Disabilities(PWDS) that brings together all categories if disabilities including the physically,sensory and mentally impaired people.
NUDIPU`S MISSION
NUDIPU was formed to create a unified voice of PWDS in orde to advocate for equalisation of opportunities,involvement and participation in policy planning and implementation of disability programmes in close co-operation with government,NGOs and general public.The main purpose is to influence the provision of services in favour of PWDs in Uganda.
NUDIPU`S OBJECTIVES
-To facilitate NUDIPU achieve its mission,and provide meaningful services to its membership,the following main objectives have been developed;
-Mobilise PWDs to form groups and organisations for collective action.
-Influence the legislation in favour of PWDs.
-Improve on the social and economic situation of PWDs through lobbying for employment opportunities and access to income generating activities.
-Improve on the management and implementation of NUDIPU programmes through training in identified areas.
-Promote and influence the delivery of services to PWDs through networking and collaboration with government and other NGOs.
-Raise awareness on needs,problems,limitations,potentials and rights of PWDs so as to change society`s negative attitudes towards them.
WHAT IS NUDIPU`S MEMBERSHIP
NUDIPU is comprised of District Unions of PWDs established in all 56 Districts in Uganda See map below

NUDIPU,being an umbrella organisation ,it does not deal directly with individual PWDs,but can provide information and guidance to individuals regarding appropriate groups or Associtions to join.It also advises on the formation of new groups and can assist such groups to grow into fully fledged Associations.NUDIPU also collaborates with Uni-disability organisations such as;Uganda National Association of the Deaf(UNAD),Uganda National Association of the Blind(UNAB),Mental Health Uganda(MHU),Uganda Parents Association of Children with Learning Disabilities(UPACLED) and National Union of Women with Disabilities of Uganda
NUDIPU STRUCTURE
NUDIPU structure comprises of three organs namely:-
GENERAL ASSEMBLY (GA)
This is the supreme policy making body of NUDIPU that meets once in three years to,inter-alia,elct the Board of directors,review the consititution and consider any ammendments there to,receive progress reports and approve future plans of action.The GA is comprised of delegates from the 56 Membership Unions and observers from the associate member organisations.
THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS (BOD>
The BOD makes decisions on behalf of the General Assembly and monitors the day to day running of NUDIPU. It also appoints all staff members(secretariat).
SECRETARIAT
This is the executive organ of the Union,which manages all the programmes,implements the decisions of the BOD and takes care of the day to day running of the organisation.The secretariat reports to the Board of Directors.
NUDIPU`S PROGRAMME
-Advocacy and Lobbying.
This programme entails policy influence disability mainstreaming and equalisation of opportunities for PWDs.
-Networking and collaboration.
NUDIPU networks with Government at both nationa and local levels, with NGOs and other institutions through various fora for purposes of collaboration, information sharing and joint Advocacy.
-Capacity building.
This entails training of leaders and councillors of PWDs to equip them with relevant skills for effective management of their organisations.
-Gender and development.
This programme involves AIDS education,family planning,legal and gender training of Resource persons and awareness creation.
-Assistive Devices.
NUDPU does not directly provide appliances but cooperates with and influences service providers to provide such appliances to deserving PWDs at subsidised rates.
-Research and Documentation.
This programme is designed to undertake research in various areas on disability,compile and document data and create awareness.The research unit works closely with members of parliament and councillors representing PWDs,District Union and other stakeholders.
-Economic empowerment.
This component aims at promoting equitable and sustainable participation of PWDs in small scale enterprise through self employment.The intervention involves building the capacity of PWDs to improve on their enterpreneurship skills and efficient management of their own Income Generating Activities.
-Radio programme.
This programme involves running of Disability related issues on the Radio for public awareness raising.
-Deaf blind progamme.
This programme entails identification and trainig of the Deafblind.
NUDIPU`S KEY ACHIEVEMENTS
-Mobilisation of PWDs to form 56 districts cross disability coalitions now affliated to NUDIPU.
-Lobbied for and attained five Members of parliament representing PWDs.
-Lobbied for and attained 47,000 councillors with disabilities from village(LC1) to District(LCV) level.Among the councillors at LC1 to LCV,50% are women with disabilities.
-Presidential appointments of PWDs to positions of authority such as a Minister of state,a Resident District Commissioner and a presidential adviser,Commissioner Consitutional Review Commission.
-Lobbied for secretary of Disability and Eldery at LCV,PWDs`self representation on District service commissions,accounts committee and tender boards.
-Lobbied for,disability sensitive provisions in the national constitution and several parliamentary Acts.
-Lobbied for inclusion of children with disabilities as a priority among the four children to be sponsered by the state,under the Universal Primary Education(UPE) scheme.
-NUDIPU is now housed in its own permanent administration block.
