Uganda National Action On Physical Disabilty (UNAPD)

UNAPD

This is a non government organisation, which is an umbrella body for physically disabled persons of Uganda. It was started in I998 after realising that there was no organisation uniting and advocating for the physically disabled persons of Uganda. It is now operating in 25 districts of Uganda working with associations of physically disabled people in those districts. UNAPD in 2007 sent two representatives to Egmont højskole to study and come back home with knoweldge that can help it in achieving its mission, vision and objectives. These were Irene and James. This web page as been worked on by Irene.

Life in Egmont

Life in Egmont has been very fantastic.I had never seen
such life before, and i had never made as many friends before.
Every thing is good, the infrastructures like, the buildings, roads
and utilities are all well functioning. What amazed me most was that,
some doors open and close by them selves, some lights also switch
themselves on and off. I was really tantalised, i had never seen this
before in my life.

The rooms inside are very bright, painted with a cream colour,
oh I like cream. For some rooms like mine there is alot of space,
good enough for handcapped people with wheelchairs. The rooms are
what we call in Uganda 'self contained', having a toilet and a bathroom
inside, really nice.

Classrooms are comfortable, with good tables and chairs and with enough
breathing space. The teachers are very kind and very global line friendly.
Although some seem very reserved, i loved the global line teachers, especially
our contact teacher for 2007.

Students at Egmont

At the time i was in Egmont the students came from different countries,
Of course the biggest number came from Denmark. International students were
25 out of 150 students. I liked all the international students.

There seemed to be some kind of bound between all of us international students
Yet we came from different countries and cultural background, maybe this was because we had many things in common, like we were all foreigners in denmark and we used english for communication.

Most of the Danish students were nice to us. Although some of them were very reserved and seemed not to like foreigners especially blacks or Africans.

The food

At first i found the food really very funny, cold and dry.
But as time went on i got used to it. By the time i left,
it was very okay i would look forward to it but before i
used to dread eating time. We used to eat in table groups,
And every one was put in this group. I think our table group
was the best. There was a bond between us all, although three
of us were from Africa and the rest from Denmark, we had a
a closeness that was amazing.

Classes

The classes were really nice, Thursdays were the best,
there was swimmming and denmark for beginnersfor the
first half of the semester and the second half there was
swimming and handcap/disability sport. Really nice day for me.

The rest of the days had their wonders,
Tuesday and Wednesday were global line days
With teacher Tina Arvid, nice teacher, i used to
like her very much. She used to understand us very well

The teachers

The teachers in Egmont were really nice people. Most were
happy people always smiling.I liked the principle too, though i never got to talk to him.

Principle Ole Lauth was a nice man, down to earth, he would be every where
He would do any thing, he would also be on duty sometimes like any other
teacher at school. I had never seen this before, because i am used to our
Ugandan headteachers who feel so good to even be available in their offices
to serve their clients. Ugandan headteachers as they are called now, dont
ever go to class to teach yet they are qualified as teachers. But the principle
in Egmont gave me another picture about management.

The rest of the teachers were fine people. Very casual, i left Egmont without
seeing any dressed in a suit or putting on a tie not even the principle.
They usually put on jeans and T-shirts or sweaters like the normal and casual
dressing in Denmark.

Classmates;

We were 8 people in our global line class. Two men from Nepal, one
woman from Ghana, three women from Uganda and two men from Uganda.
Unfortunately the two people from Nepal didnot not finish the course
because their dear ones at home had serious medical problems which
compelled them to go back home.

My classmates were good. Although we all had our differences,
we managed to complete the course in good harmony. In my class,
we all had different backgrounds, values and beliefs. Some believed in
in the kind of life styles in Egmnont and also participated in it, while
others thought that this kind of life style was sinister and too worldly,
So they thought better to avoid it by staying in their rooms when they thought
that the world aside their rooms was too crazy.

Shopping

Shopping day was wednesday afternoon. Our assistant teacher
would take us out to Odder for shopping. Every one would look
forward to this afternoon because almost all of us liked shopping.
The favourite shops were the three second hand shops in Odder. In
these shops every thing was affordable. We liked the shops so much.

Study tour

I chose Amsterdam for my study tour, and
I never had any regrets. The tour was super.
I had fun, i was really amused by Armsterdam.
The red light district was really fun to see.
The school provided me with a helper to push
my wheel chair, so i never had walking problems.
My helper was Louise Fly, she the best girl i
have ever met in Egmont.
Me and Louise in Armsterdam.

Joachim

He has been our assistant teacher. He is a very handsome man. Everyone in Egmont likes him many girls are falling over him. He is very kind with a very good sense of humour. He likes Africans, of course he has to like them because its their class he assists. Most of all he likes James. He doesnt mind to be called Papa. I think he is the best assistant teacher Egmont has ever had. Globaliners 2007 love him very much.

Me, Myself and i

Personal achievement from Egmont.

My self esteem and confidence have improved alot. I believe in myself.

I have learnt to be honest and transparent in my life. These two are very important elements in one's life, and also for a country. Now i know that if we are to achieve development in my country then everyone has got to be honest and transparent in whatever they do.

I have learnt alot from Egmont and being in Denmark, summarised in the following; Trust, honesty, transparence, democracy, human rights, good governance/management and most of all valuing human life.

If we are to develop in Uganda we have along way to go as far as these elements are concerned.
