Uganda National Action on physical Disability
INTRODUCTION:
Disability is worldwide phenomenon,a challenge in every county, the will occur irrespective of family,
background, economic or social status
The poor, however, are more prone to in incidence of disability. Uganda has approximately 1,200,000
people with physical disabilities, this is
approximately 6% of the total population.
People with disabilities (PWD) face challenges of negative attitudes from society leading to isolation,
lack of recognition, poor access to services, lack of employment and suffer discrimination by their families,
society, service providers and in social circles.
Government and society in general do not take disability as apriority
and underrate the magnitude of problems of persons with
disabilities. The biggest problem is to overcome these challenges.
As people with physical disabilities in Uganda we got together in June 1998 to address
these challenges and as a result formed
an advocating body that has evolved into Uganda National Action on physical Disability (UNAPD)
VISION
UNAPD look forward to society where people with disabilities are accorded rights enjoyed by all citizens.
MISSION
To become a leading action oriented disabled peoples organisation dedicated to the removal of barriers in
society which prevent
people with disabilities from enjoying full rights.
OUR BELIEF:
As persons with physical disabilities, UNAPD members believe the persons with disabilities have as much to
contribute to national
development as anyone else. We must however be supported by society to develop our inert potential to optimal
levels that will
facilitate our contribution to national development to We need.
• Equal access to information and knowledge.
• Better access to medical care.
• Power to control our lives.
• Better living and working conditions.
• Empowerment, involvement and participation in our own development
OBJECTIVES OF UNAPD
The Organisation is working towards the following objectives:
• To establish UNAPD as a National Organisation of persons with a physical disabilities.
• To promote programmers for rehabilitation, full social integration, independent living and productivity
of persons with
physical disabilities.
• To promote equal opportunities for people with disabilities in general and physical disabilities
in particular, meaning the process through which the general system of society is accessible
